ORTHOPAEDIC JOINT REPLACEMENT

Orthopaedics is a branch of surgery mainly focuses on the conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. This branch primarily includes bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles.
Joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which an arthritic, inflamed or damaged joint of the body is removed and replaced with an artificial joint which is called a prosthesis. Most commonly performed joint replacements are hip and knee replacements.

Common causes of joint pain

Joint injury including fractures, dislocation, strain etc
Artheritis
Gout
Tendinitis ( Inflammation of tendon-A thick fibrous cords that attach muscle to the bone)
Bursitis (Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs to the joints)

Requirement of joint replacement therapy

Joint replacement surgery is required when

A patient is suffering from daily and throbbing joint pain and feels stiffness to the joints.
A patient is suffering from severe joint pain, enough to restrict the daily activities.
A patient is not significantly overweight but still having severe joint pain.
Patient with significant deformity of the joints.

Method:

The prosthesis used in the surgical joint replacement is composed of a metal (stainless steel, titanium, chrome, cobalt, or polyethylene) piece that fits into a matching plastic piece. Plastic bone cement is used to anchor the prosthesis into the bone. The damages end of an arthritic bone is replaced with a prosthesis to restore knee movement and functions in knee replacement.
In the arthritic hip replacement, the damaged ball portion of the joint is removed and replaced by an artificial metal ball using either bone cement or a special material that help to attach the remaining bone to the new joint.

Risk & complications of Joint replacement therapy:

Joint dislocation:

Very common risk after a hip replacement surgery. Hip precautions can be taken to minimize the risk.

Blood clots:

Most common problem after any surgery. Precaution like medication, stocking and exercise may minimize the risk of blood clotting.

Infection:

Infections may occur in wounds after the surgery. Use of antibiotics can be the best choice to avoid post-surgical infections. Infections can be redeveloped after years of the surgery.

Nerve injury:

Rare but chances are there. May recover completely.

Loosening:

There are the possibilities of loosening of the prosthesis after joint replacement surgery. A second surgery is needed after the occurrence of this complication.

Prosthetic breakage:

Breakage of the prosthesis is rare but may occur. A second surgery is needed in this case.

Advantages of total joint replacement surgery

According to studies, almost 90% of the patients return to work successfully after hip replacement surgeries and 98% return to work after knee replacement surgeries.
Patients receiving joints replacement show nearly half the risk of death after seven years compared to Osteoarthritic patients not receiving joint replacement surgeries.
Surgery shows excellent long term durability and excellent results. Joint replacement therapy is cost saving as it reduces the permanent disability.
