SPINE SURGERY

The spine is a column of bones made of 33 individual bones called vertebrae, which supports the whole body. The spinal column is the main support system of the body which allows movement, allowing you to bend, stand, twist while protecting the spinal cord from the various injuries.

Reasons to have spinal surgery

Compression on the spinal nerves

Back surgery can be the treatment of compressed nerves because of disc herniation or spinal stenosis which may lead to excess pain, muscle weakness and other severe symptoms.

Unstable spine

There are various causes of the unstable spine (Inability of the spinal column to maintain its natural form) such as spinal fractures, injuries, spondylolisthesis etc. Surgery is needed if symptoms like back pain, leg pain appears.

Crooked spine

Scoliosis (abnormal lateral curvature of the spine.), kyphosis (excessive outward curvature of the spine) and flat back syndrome are the conditions which can affect the natural shape of the spine. Surgery is required to realign the spine.

Different types of surgical treatments are as follows:

Spine discectomy

Discectomy is a surgery to remove a protruding part of the disc to release the pressure to the nerves. The procedure involves removal of a portion of the disc which causes pain by pressing a nerve. Removal is performed through a small incision

Laminectomy

A spinal decompression surgery involves removal of a small portion of the lamina (a posterior arch of the vertebral bone) or a partial removal of the lamina to increase the size of the opening in a lamina to take pressure off a nerve is called laminectomy. Postlaminectomy syndrome is the major risk after performing the surgery.

Laminotomy

Laminotomy is also a spinal decompression surgery involves the complete removal of lamina of the vertebrae (a part of the vertebrae that overlies the spinal canal). Removal of lamina results enlarge spinal canal, thus releasing pressure to the nerves.

Spinal fusion

Spinal fusion is an another surgical technique involves a permanent joining of two or more vertebrae in order to stop the movement between them. This surgical procedure is performed to stabilize broken vertebrae or to treat spondylolisthesis (a vertebra slips forward onto the bone below it).

Risk and complications of spine surgery

Sometimes no improvement or worsened pain is the major risk with spine surgeries, therefore a second surgery is needed. Infection, damage of a nerve, leakage of spinal fluid, paralysis, bleeding, nerve root damage and recurrent disc herniation are other major complications due to spinal cord surgeries.
